Deploying a Milvus Standalone Cluster with KubeBlocks

Standalone is a lightweight deployment suitable for development and testing with following components:

  • Milvus Core: Provides vector search and database functionality
  • Metadata Storage (ETCD): Stores cluster metadata and configuration
  • Object Storage (MinIO/S3): Persists vector data and indexes

Prerequisites

    Before proceeding, ensure the following:

    • Environment Setup:
      • A Kubernetes cluster is up and running.
      • The kubectl CLI tool is configured to communicate with your cluster.
      • KubeBlocks CLI and KubeBlocks Operator are installed. Follow the installation instructions here.
    • Namespace Preparation: To keep resources isolated, create a dedicated namespace for this tutorial:

    Deploying the Milvus Standalone Cluster

    Key Configuration Details:

    • clusterDef: milvus: Specifies the ClusterDefinition CR for the cluster.
    • topology: standalone: Configures the cluster to use standalone topology.
    • componentSpecs: Defines the components in the cluster

    Verifying the Deployment

    Check the Cluster Status

    Once the cluster is deployed, check its status:

    kubectl get cluster milvus-standalone -n demo -w

    Expected Output:

    Cleanup

    To remove all resources created during this tutorial:

    kubectl delete cluster milvus-standalone -n demo kubectl delete ns demo
